In this article, we will discuss how to disable updates in Windows 10. This method is applicable to both Windows 10 Pro and Home editions.

The first thing we need to do is to disable the service that launches Windows updates.

— In the Windows search, type “Services” and open it by double-clicking the left mouse button.

— Scroll down to the bottom and find “Windows Update”.

— Open the service by double-clicking the left mouse button and in the “Startup type” section, choose “Disabled”, then click the “Stop” button.

— Now go to the “Recovery” section and select “Take no action” in all three points, set “Reset error counter” to “90” days.
After these actions, click the “Apply” button.

The second thing we need to do is to perform some manipulations with the Windows update download folder.

Go to drive “C”, then follow this path Windows => SoftwareDistribution => Download

— In the Download section, select all the files and folders present there, then delete them.

— After deletion, go back to the “SoftwareDistribution” folder, now we need to rename the “Download” folder, right-click => rename.

In this case, I’ll just add two characters “–” after the name “Download”, so it should be “Download–“.

Now we need to create a new file named “Download”, in this case, we’ll first create it in “.txt” text format.

— Go to the desktop and right-click => create a text document.

— Then, drag it back to our open “SoftwareDistribution” folder.

— Click “Continue”.

Next, we need to make this text file without the .txt extension.

— Go to the “View” section and check “File name extensions”.

Now we can see the extensions of any file, in this case, at the end of the name “Download” it shows “.txt”.

Our task is to remove “.txt” from the name, thus changing the file extension from text to a file with no extension.

— Right-click on the file => rename, delete “.txt” from the name and press “Enter”.

— Then a warning popup will appear, click “Yes”.

— Click “Continue” and then “Yes” again.

Now all that’s left is to restart your computer, after which Windows updates will no longer bother you.

If this method doesn’t work for you, you can try disabling updates using third-party software, more details on how to do this are explained in our next article.

We strongly do not recommend disabling updates in Windows 10. Updates help fix system errors and maintain system security at an appropriate level. Disable updates only in extreme cases!
